UIS researchers uphold the university’s reputation at the Colombian Cardiology Congress

Investigadores UIS

The Electrocardiography (EKG) research group and its Cardiovascular research seedbed made a high-impact contribution to the recent Colombian Cardiology Congress, held in Cartagena from February 26 to 28, 2026.

The delegation presented significant advances in the development of association models for heart failure, highlighting the methodological rigor and clinical applicability of their findings in contemporary medicine.

This model seeks to optimize prognostic accuracy in critically ill patients under current drug therapies, improving decision-making in the hospital setting.

The study was led by Dr. Luis Eduardo Echeverría Correa, in conjunction with researchers Lyda Z. Rojas, Laura V. Arciniegas Landínez, Angie Yarlady Serrano García, Angela Torres Bustamante, Karen Andrea García Rueda, Jaime A. Rodríguez, and Sergio A. Gómez Ochoa.

It is noteworthy that Arciniegas Landínez actively participated in the development of this project during her special rotation at the FCV research center with senior researcher Rojas.

Among the most relevant contributions presented in oral format, the development of the “ICARUS Score” stood out, a practical model for stratifying the risk of in-hospital mortality in acutely decompensated chronic heart failure in the era of the four pillars.

Likewise, in the digital poster category, the group presented the work Controversy over the sustainability of intensive systolic blood pressure treatment in the SPRINT study. An example of Simpson’s paradox. This study, which provides a critical view of the interpretation of a large clinical trial, was led by Oscar L. Rueda, Catalina Herrán-Fonseca, a senior student at UNAB on a special research rotation with the EKG Group at UIS; María Alejandra Reyes, Ronnie Celis, and Dimitris Rizopoulos.

Finally, we highlight the work entitled “Electro-structural Dissociation in Chagasic Cardiopathy versus Ischemic Cardiomyopathy: Implications for the Stratification of Sudden Death Risk,” led by Dr. Luis Eduardo Echeverria, in collaboration with UIS professor Lyda Zoraya Rojas and Drs. Carlos Morillo, Angie Serrano García, Yina Tatiana Ariza, Carlos A. Luengas, Angela Torres, Karen Andrea García, and Sergio A. Gómez. This work won second place as the best original research work in cardiology at the national level.

With this outstanding participation, the diaspora of researchers trained at the UIS continues to lead the frontier of cardiovascular knowledge, contributing decisively to the growth of science in Colombia and strengthening the links between academia and high-complexity centers.
