A day filled with flavor, environmental awareness, and collective action, students from the Nutrition and Dietetics program at the Industrial University of Santander (UIS) joined World Disco Soup Day, now in its tenth year, under the slogan “Fill stomachs, not trash cans.”
This global initiative, driven by the Slow Food Youth Network, brought together communities from different countries under a single purpose: to rescue food and transform it into shared meals, promoting the reduction of food waste.
The event brought together students, professors, and community members for a participatory experience where cooking, music, and education intertwined. In the city, the celebration was led by the local Slow Food community and the School of Nutrition, who organized a gathering that combined gastronomy, culture, games, and dance.
“Disco Sopa” is much more than a culinary event. It is a social movement that invites reflection on the fate of edible food that is often discarded. During the event, participants salvaged surplus fruits, vegetables, and other produce, transforming them into communal dishes that were shared in a festive atmosphere.
This movement traces its roots back to 2012 in Berlin, with the “Schnippeldisko,” a creative protest against food waste. Since then, the initiative has grown into a global movement that, since 2017, has been held on the last Saturday of April in dozens of countries.
For this edition, it was estimated that nearly 100 events would take place in different regions of the world, including countries such as Colombia, Peru, Ethiopia, and Brazil, highlighting the scope and relevance of this collective action. Over the years, World “Disco Sopa” Day has prevented the waste of thousands of kilograms of food and raised awareness among entire communities about the importance of transforming our consumption habits.
The event in Bucaramanga not only had a tangible impact on waste reduction but also sent a clear message: change begins at the local level, when communities organize and turn a problem into an opportunity to share, educate, and celebrate.
