UIS sparks innovation in Piedecuesta with the launch of STEM-MóviLab

The UIS’s STEM-MóviLab project kicked off at Víctor Félix Gómez Nova High School, promoting STEM education through hands-on learning in secondary school.

The Víctor Félix Gómez Nova School hosted the first of three sessions of the STEM-MóviLab project, an initiative led by the Industrial University of Santander (UIS) that seeks to transform learning experiences in secondary education through science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

During this inaugural session, the Experimental Kit was officially presented to the school, marking the start of a process that will allow students to engage with scientific knowledge in a practical and meaningful way. This activity sparked innovation in the classroom, promoting new ways of learning, creating, and understanding their environment.

This initiative is funded by the UIS as part of the Research and Outreach Strengthening Plan (VIE 2025), specifically through the “For Our Well-Being” call for proposals, which supports projects with social and educational impact, recognizing pedagogical innovation as a strategic component for educational transformation.

The mobile laboratory consists of experimental kits designed by the project team, which include standard science lab equipment, organized in cases that facilitate transport to the classroom. Additionally, student safety is ensured through the use of goggles, gloves, and lab coats.

Promoting School Learning

The project involves research groups from the UIS, such as the Corrosion Research Group (GIC) and the Catalysis Research Group (CICAT), the Central Surface Science Laboratory (Surflab), and the Center for Teaching Development (CEDEDUIS), which allows for the integration of scientific knowledge with school settings and exposes students to experiences typical of higher education.

This first session marks the beginning of a training process that will continue with two additional meetings, during which students’ interest in STEM fields and their understanding of training opportunities in engineering and science will continue to be strengthened.

Through MóviLab, the UIS reaffirms its commitment to social outreach and innovative education, helping new generations discover in science and engineering accessible and powerful tools to transform their reality.
