The School of Geology at the Universidad Industrial de Santander (UIS) welcomed Amat David Zuluaga Guerra, Director General of the Colombian Geological Service (SGC), who returned to the UIS Central Campus to meet with university administrators, engage with students, and tour the University’s facilities and those of the academic unit.
During his visit, the SGC director had the opportunity to learn more about the School of Geology’s educational and research facilities, visit the Guatiguará Technological Park (PTG), and learn about some of the work carried out by the University in the field of geoscience.
The UIS alumnus also participated in a meeting with faculty members and students from different semesters, where they discussed opportunities for collaboration between UIS and the SGC. The Colombian Geological Service is responsible for generating scientific knowledge about the country’s subsurface, mineral resources, and geological phenomena.
Amat David Zuluaga Guerra
Zuluaga Guerra is a geologist from the Universidad Industrial de Santander and holds a Master’s degree in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Salford, England. His professional career has focused on geoscience, mineral resources, hydrocarbons, energy systems, applied research, and territorial analysis.
On Wednesday, August 26, the Ministry of Mines and Energy officially announced his appointment as Director General of the Colombian Geological Service (SGC). Since taking office, one of his responsibilities and key objectives has been to strengthen the role of geoscientific knowledge as an input for decision-making on matters of national importance.
Amat David highlighted the key aspects of these meetings between universities and research institutions: “One of the fundamental pillars of the SGC is to strengthen knowledge and help students understand the importance of geoscience in the country’s development. This is a key point. We are building relationships, establishing connections, showcasing this work to the country, and we will surely receive support from universities for an academic and scientific purpose that is part of the network of institutions in the country dedicated to science and technology”.
The UIS alumnus’s visit strengthened the ties between UIS and the Colombian Geological Service, while also opening up new opportunities for collaboration in education, research, and knowledge generation.
