Identify and prevent: UIS applies characterization tests to new students

With the objective of identifying risk factors in cognitive, biopsychosocial, academic and health areas, the Universidad Industrial de Santander (UIS), through Student Welfare and the Academic Excellence System (SEA), began the application of characterization tests to 1,473 first-time students.

“This is an articulated work between the Coordination of Health Services and the SEA. Thanks to the results obtained, we can detect risks and guide students who require it towards educational-preventive and academic programs. The goal is to ensure that they have access to a comprehensive education, with health and educational support,” said María Paula Hernández, coordinator of the Comprehensive Health and Psychosocial Development Services of Bienestar Estudiantil.

The students have welcomed this strategy, which demonstrates the institutional commitment to their welfare from the first day of university life. This initiative seeks that their passage through higher education is enriching, with goals achieved and a formation oriented to excellence.

“I think it is excellent that the University supports us from the beginning with these tests and that they explain their purpose with empathy. It is very valuable to know that they will be there to help us throughout our career,” expressed Cristian Pinto, Industrial Engineering student.

“It is an adequate system. From the questions, they are guiding us if they detect any difficulty or risk. We definitely feel safer and supported by the University,” added Juan Rojas, Mechanical Engineering student.

In addition, the participants highlighted the organization of the process and the human quality of the professionals who accompany them. “Each test has trained personnel, always willing to guide us and clarify doubts. I liked learning about the benefits offered by Bienestar Estudiantil and SEA”, commented Karoll Medina, student of Bachelor’s Degree in Literature and Spanish Language.

Some parents also accompanied their children during the day. Mrs. Mary Hernández, who traveled from Valle del Cauca, valued this initiative of the UIS as a factor of confidence in the formative process of her daughter: “I think it is excellent because these exams allow young people to have a diagnosis of their health status and the University to know its new students better. So far the experience has been very positive, with very attentive and committed professionals,” she said.

The tests will be conducted until Friday, July 25, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at CENTIC and at the Student Welfare building.
