The School of Law and Political Science at the Industrial University of Santander (UIS) invites students, professors, researchers, legal professionals, and the general public to participate in the Open Lecture on Public International Law, “International Law in Practice: The Case of the JEP,” which will take place on May 11 at 8:00 a.m. at the Nuevo Carmenza Landázabal Auditorium at UIS. The event will be held in a hybrid format and will also be livestreamed.
Featuring Magistrate Óscar Parra Vera, member of Colombia’s Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP), the academic event will offer a practical perspective on the relationship between International Law, transitional justice processes, and the protection of human rights in Colombia.
Transitional Justice and Human Rights
During the lecture, participants will discuss contemporary legal challenges related to truth, reparations, guarantees of non-repetition, and peacebuilding, drawing from the experience of the JEP and the international standards that guide these processes.
The lecture aims to become a space for academic reflection and analysis, allowing attendees to better understand how International Law directly influences judicial decisions, victims’ rights protection, and the consolidation of democratic and reconciliation processes.
In addition to strengthening critical thinking and promoting legal debate, this event represents an opportunity to bring the university community and the general public closer to discussions of national and international relevance. Likewise, it will contribute to a deeper understanding of the role of International Law in transitional justice processes. In this regard, the event becomes especially significant in a context where transitional justice remains a central topic in Colombia’s public agenda.
Through initiatives such as this, the UIS School of Law and Political Science reaffirms its commitment to comprehensive education, the promotion of open academic spaces, and informed discussion on the country’s most important legal and social challenges.
