With a series of academic, practical and awareness activities, the UIS Malaga campus commemorated the National Arbor Day, reaffirming its commitment to environmental education and conservation of natural resources.
Within the framework of the subject “Nurseries and Forest Plantations” oriented by the teacher Cristian Molina, students of the Forestry Engineering program participated in a day of “Sembratón” that achieved the planting of 400 tree individuals of species such as elder, guamo, chachafruto, walnut and guayacán among others.
This activity was developed thanks to the articulated work with institutions of the municipality and took place in the vicinity of the Málaga reservoir. The university nursery provided 128 guayacán seedlings as part of the efforts to restore and enrich the vegetation cover of the territory.
The agenda also included an educational activity led by the fifth semester students of Forestry Engineering, Lina Angarita and Yesica Sepúlveda, aimed at ninth grade students of the Escuela Normal Superior Francisco de Paula Santander. During the meeting, the students gave a talk on the importance of trees in ecosystems and the role of Geomatics in monitoring them using tools such as Google Earth, QGIS and OruxMaps.

One of the most significant moments of the day was the focus on the ceiba barrigona, a native species that is currently in danger of extinction. The students highlighted its ecological value, and made a symbolic delivery of seedlings accompanied by informative messages, seeking to raise awareness about the need to protect it.
The day also included a group reflection and the planting of some Eucalyptus on the Normal’s grounds, strengthening the environmental commitment of the academic and school community.
In this regard, the student Lina Angarita said that the purpose of the activity is to continue raising awareness about the importance of caring for ecosystems, inviting each person to contribute with small actions to their protection.

For his part, Rodrigo Basto Martínez, teacher of Natural Sciences at the Escuela Normal Superior, highlighted the value of these initiatives promoted by the UIS Malaga Campus.
“It is a very enriching activity, since it motivates students to take care of the environment and highlights the importance of planting a tree in our environment,” he said.
With activities like these, not only trees are planted, but also values and commitment to nature, remembering that every action counts when it comes to protecting the planet.
