With emotion, hope, and renewed dreams, the Industrial University of Santander (UIS) officially welcomed its new students in Saravena, reaffirming its commitment to bringing relevant, high-quality higher education to Colombia’s most remote territories. The event was led by Professor Jorge Villamizar, UIS Manager for Territories, who emphasized that this institutional initiative “not only expands access to public higher education, but also transforms regions and builds the future through education.”

UIS’s arrival in Saravena marked a milestone for the municipality and the department of Arauca, allowing dozens of young people to begin their professional education without leaving their territory, families, or cultural roots. “I’m very happy that UIS has arrived here in Saravena. I invite all young people to take advantage of this great opportunity,” said Naomi, one of the new students.
Strengthening Institutional Presence in the Region
In a prior meeting with the Municipal Administration, led by Mayor Juan Ignacio Cifuentes Santos, Professor Jorge Villamizar officially appointed Professor Juan Diego Colegial as coordinator of the UIS Saravena campus. He will provide ongoing support to the academic community and coordinate academic and administrative processes from the Rafael Pombo Technical Industrial Educational Institution.

“This is a decisive step toward consolidating UIS’s presence in the region and opening new opportunities for the youth of Saravena and Arauca,” Villamizar said, announcing that a joint press conference between the University and the Mayor’s Office will be held this Friday to share important news for the region.
Voices that Reflect Hope
Students’ testimonies reflect the immediate impact of this initiative. Jaider Camargo said he feels “happy and motivated” to begin his university journey, while Jason Antonio Caria Pérez, a member of an Indigenous community, highlighted that UIS’s arrival prevents many young people from having to travel far to study: “The university is already here, and it’s excellent.”
Meanwhile, Luisa Gómez shared that although she arrived nervous, the induction day made her feel supported: “The professors are very kind, explain clearly, and make me feel that I’m where I’ve always wanted to be.”

With this initiative in Saravena, the Industrial University of Santander reaffirms its leadership in inclusive public education and its mission to positively impact regions by providing real opportunities for professional training, social development, and territorial transformation.
UIS is not just arriving in Saravena — it is here to stay, grow, and build the future alongside its people.
