The Industrial University of Santander (UIS) is hosting a visit from academic peer reviewers appointed by Colombia’s National Accreditation Council (CNA) as part of the external evaluation process for the Specialization in Gynecology and Obstetrics, aimed at renewing its high-quality accreditation. The agenda will provide an opportunity to assess the program’s academic processes, quality conditions, and progress in meeting the standards established by the CNA.
The evaluation is being conducted by José Rodrigo Cifuentes Borrero, serving as the coordinating peer reviewer, and Eusebio Consuegra Manzano, academic peer reviewer. During the visit, they will examine different aspects of the program’s operation and academic development to assess its compliance with the established accreditation criteria.
A School of Medicine committed to academic quality
As part of the opening ceremony, UIS Vice President for Research and Outreach Cristian Blanco Tirado and Vice President for Administrative Affairs Gerardo Latorre Bayona welcomed the peer reviewers, accompanied by university directors and staff members. The meeting included the formal introduction of the participants and a presentation of the University’s progress in fulfilling its institutional missions through an institutional video.
For Luis Miguel Sosa Ávila, Director of the UIS School of Medicine, this visit represents an opportunity to reaffirm the quality standards that have consistently guided medical education at the University.
He highlighted that the School of Medicine holds 10-year high-quality accreditation, the highest distinction awarded through this evaluation process. He also emphasized that all 10 of the School’s medical and surgical specialty programs have obtained or renewed their high-quality accreditation.
In this context, the external evaluation of the Specialization in Gynecology and Obstetrics takes place within an institutional framework focused on strengthening academic quality and the training of healthcare professionals.
Self-evaluation as a path toward continuous improvement
Meanwhile, Jackeline Jaimes Becerra, Director of the UIS Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, explained that the program currently holds six-year high-quality accreditation, which expires in 2027. The peer review visit is therefore an important step toward renewing this recognition, with the goal of obtaining an eight- or ten-year accreditation period.
She emphasized that the accreditation process has helped consolidate a culture of self-evaluation, identify opportunities for improvement, and strengthen the program’s academic and administrative components.
She also stressed that the main objective is to maintain high standards in specialist training and ensure that graduates are prepared to meet the demands of their professional fields.
Through this external evaluation, UIS continues to strengthen its quality assurance, self-evaluation, and continuous improvement processes, reaffirming its commitment to excellence in healthcare education.
