The Universidad Industrial de Santander continues to strengthen its regional academic offering with the approval, by the Academic Council, of the Food Engineering undergraduate program in on-campus (face-to-face) modality, to be offered in Barbosa (Santander) and Saravena (Arauca), as established in Agreement No. 353 of December 9, 2025. This decision represents a milestone in consolidating UIS’s institutional presence in the regions and reaffirms its commitment to educating human talent aligned with the country’s productive and social development.
The new program aims to train well-rounded professionals with leadership, creativity, and ethical responsibility, equipped to design, adapt, improve, and innovate processes, plants, and equipment for the transformation, preservation, and assurance of food quality and safety. Its approach integrates teaching, research, and engagement with external stakeholders, strengthening academic and productive ties in the territories where the program will be implemented.

The creation of the program responds to national and regional challenges related to food security, environmental sustainability, and productive transformation, in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals, Colombia’s Mission of Experts (Misión de Sabios), and public policies focused on food sovereignty and agro-industrial innovation. In this context, Food Engineering is consolidated as a strategic field to reduce post-harvest losses, add value to local production, and ensure safe, high-quality food.
As established in the Agreement, the University, through the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs, will carry out the process to obtain the qualified registration from the Ministry of National Education, a key step for the implementation of the program. With this approval, UIS strengthens its presence in Barbosa and Saravena, reaffirming its role as a public institution committed to regional development, equity in access to higher education, and the sustainable transformation of territories.
