This is the new look of the entrance on Carrera 25: a more people-friendly campus that’s better connected to the city

The Industrial University of Santander is renovating its entrance on Carrera 25 with a project that prioritizes pedestrian access, expands green spaces, and opens the campus to the city.

The Industrial University of Santander (UIS) continues to transform its urban environment with a clear commitment: to prioritize people, reclaim public space, and strengthen its relationship with the city.

After a week of reflection, the institution is preparing to welcome its academic community back with a renewed look in the western section of the central campus. The entrance at 7th Street and 25th Avenue stands as a symbol of this new vision.

UIS Rector Hernán Porras Díaz explained the scope of this change: “We want to welcome you here, at the entrance on 7th Street and 25th Avenue, with a new vision for the university’s public space in this western sector of the central campus.”

A space designed with people in mind

The project has focused on improving pedestrian mobility by promoting safer and more pleasant routes. Although vehicular traffic will continue, it will be managed through a traffic-calming approach designed to harmonize with the surrounding environment.

In this new setting, students are already noticing the changes. Fernando José Pérez Carpio noted that the redesign “blends very well with the green spaces” and creates “a slightly more pleasant atmosphere for the university.”

Along the axis connecting Seventh Street with the physical and mechanical engineering building, green spaces now feature fruit and shade trees that invite people to gather, contemplate, and enjoy the surroundings.

Along the same lines, student Naila Cala highlighted the impact on safety and the daily experience: “I think it turned out very pleasant, very spacious, so it’s easier to walk around campus; it’s no longer like the danger from cars (…) it’s a pleasant space and makes the university more beautiful.”

Toward a “university park” open to the city

This redesign reflects a vision that has been gaining momentum at UIS: to establish itself as a “university park,” a living ecosystem where people learn, conduct research, and develop solutions for society.

One of the most significant changes will be the removal of the old brick wall that separated Carrera 25 from the campus. This historic barrier will give way to a more open and inclusive space, in coordination with the Bucaramanga Mayor’s Office, with the aim of also benefiting the neighborhood’s residents.

The transformation impacts not only students and faculty but also those who visit the institution. Luis Mariano Hidarraga, a UISALUD user, highlighted the renewed experience: “I really think it’s spectacular; it makes people who come to the university marvel and say, ‘What a wonderful space!’”
