The 2026 National Conference on Criminal and Penitentiary Law has begun, dedicated to sharing research findings aimed at analyzing and finding solutions to the challenges facing penitentiary systems through presentations and panel discussions. This event, which brings together nearly 300 participants, including national and international attendees, is organized by the School of Law and Political Science at the Industrial University of Santander (UIS).

“This is a conference with significant participation from emerging research groups. Various proposals have been presented regarding the crisis in the criminal justice and prison systems, offering relevant insights for the formulation of public policies focused on prevention and not solely on punishment,” noted Ramiro Pinzón, a professor at the UIS School of Law and Political Science.

The speakers, from various universities in the country and abroad, highlighted the organization of the event—now in its sixteenth edition—and the relevance of the topics addressed.

“This forum is essential because it brings together research advances from various institutions, including those at the international level. Here, academia’s role in generating knowledge, conducting critical analysis, and formulating solutions to complex problems comes together,” said Juan David Posada, a professor in the School of Law and Political Science at the University of Antioquia.

One of the most valued aspects of the event is the interaction between established academics and young researchers, who have the opportunity to share their work and receive expert feedback.

“This experience is invaluable for our education and professional development. It allows us to explore diverse perspectives and strengthen our research through dialogue with other academic groups,” said Duván Echeverri, a law student at the University of Antioquia.

Similarly, the students highlighted the event’s impact on their educational journey, noting how it facilitated engagement with experts and the analysis of current issues in the criminal justice and correctional systems.

“It is a very enriching experience. The caliber of the speakers and the topics addressed strengthen our critical thinking regarding criminal policy and the reality of the prison system,” commented Natalia Triana, a law student.

The 2026 National Conference on Criminal and Penitentiary Law will run through Friday, April 24. View the official schedule here.
