UIS Promotes Physical and Mental Well-Being Through Tai Chi and Latin Rhythms

Tai Chi Workshops and Courses – Latin Rhythms | Student Well-Being.

As part of its educational and preventive strategies aimed at promoting the overall well-being of the university community, the Student Well-Being Office is offering Yang-style Tai Chi and Latin Rhythms initiatives during the second academic semester. These activities seek to contribute to cardiovascular risk prevention while promoting the physical and mental well-being of students.

The initiatives are based on the recognition of physical activity as a valuable tool for developing healthy habits. Through movement, music, and dance, students can engage in health-promoting activities in a practical and enjoyable way, while also finding opportunities to connect and socialize with other members of the university community.

Movement for Well-Being

Yang-style Tai Chi, offered through the ‘Medicine in Motion’ initiative, provides an alternative approach to promoting different aspects of physical well-being. Its practice contributes to balance and motor coordination, as well as to strengthening the respiratory, circulatory, nervous, and joint systems.

It is also presented as a tool for reducing stress and improving vestibular function. Sessions take place on Wednesdays from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the Teatrino in the Logistics Building, Basement Level 1.

Meanwhile, Latin Rhythms offer an alternative that combines physical activity, music, and social interaction through classes in salsa, merengue, bachata, and other rhythms. Classes are held four times a week in the Squash Courts: Mondays from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.; Tuesdays from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.; and Thursdays and Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

These initiatives will be available throughout the second academic semester.

UIS is expanding the range of activities available to students so they can incorporate movement and physical activity into their university experience. These initiatives seek to make health care an accessible, dynamic, and shared experience, where physical and mental well-being can also be strengthened through interaction with others.
