The Ascún National University Games begin in Bucaramanga in mid-October, which is why the men’s and women’s rugby teams are stepping up their preparations for the competition.

This planning continued last weekend at the Sol de Acero Tournament held in Sogamoso (Boyacá). There, the men’s team won the championship after defeating Osos de Duitama 7-5 in the final, while the women’s team finished as runners-up after losing 28-5 to Sue de Sogamoso.

“Preparation is underway for the Ascún National Championship. We have had different tournaments, for example, in Cúcuta and another in Flandes (Tolima), as well as friendly matches with youth teams from around the country. Now we are in Sogamoso, and soon we will go to Santa Marta at the invitation of the University of Magdalena. In September, we will compete in the Santandereana Rugby League, and in October, we may go to Villavicencio to participate in the Copa Oriente and thus finish our preparation. We have high expectations; it has been good training, and I believe we have teams that can win medals at the Ascún National Championship,” explained Erwin Fernández Rico, coach of the two rugby teams.

In 2025, Bucaramanga will once again host Colombia’s most important university sports competition after 15 years. The UIS will host the event at its sports venues.
