UIS researchers won first place in research from the Santander Ophthalmological Foundation

Residents and professors from the Ophthalmology postgraduate program won first place in the “Second Foscal Innovation and Research Meeting.”

The work “Comparative results of Descemet’s membrane endothelial keratoplasty and automated Descemet’s peeling,” presented in poster format during the “Second FOSCAL Research and Innovation Meeting,” won first place in the secondary source research category in November 2025.

Dr. Alejandro Tello and Dr. Angélica M. Pedraza, professors in the Ophthalmology Specialization program at UIS, with a practice setting at FOSCAL, were co-authors of this systematic literature review study.

The study’s researchers, Dr. Rubén Berrospi, head of the Department of Ophthalmology at FOSCAL, and Drs. Paula Alejandra Navarro and Andrea Vázquez, ophthalmology residents at UNAB-FOSCAL, evaluated the best available evidence on the effectiveness and safety of two endothelial corneal transplant techniques, DSAEK and DMEK, through systematic searches of databases between 2006 and 2025. These results led to the conclusion that DMEK offers advantages in visual outcomes over DSAEK, but requires careful analysis of each case, as it has a slightly higher complication rate. This information may help specialists make individualized decisions for patients who require corneal transplantation.

Congratulations to the researchers for their achievement in this event, with a scientific product that will contribute to knowledge applied to ophthalmology.
