UIS professor presents research on anemia, academic performance, and blood donation in Europe

Mike Celis Rodríguez, profesor de la Escuela de Microbiología

With the presentation of two scientific posters, Mike Celis Rodríguez, professor at the School of Microbiology, participates in the 2nd Congress of Hematology and Blood. Held in Prague, capital of the Czech Republic, on November 3 and 4.

The first poster presents the preliminary results of his project entitled “Anemia and academic performance in students at the UIS Faculty of Health.” This study, funded by the Vice-Rector’s Office for Research and Extension (VIE) for newly appointed professors, involved 174 students, of whom 8% had anemia, with a prevalence of up to 11.8% in women. Although initial analyses did not show significant differences between the presence of anemia and cumulative grade point average, significant difficulties in time management were observed among students with anemia, which could impact their future productivity.

The second poster was a collaborative effort between students and professors, with the support of the Santander Blood Center, in which a strategy to promote blood donation through the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) was implemented. Thanks to this initiative, in just two weekends, 118 donors were recruited, benefiting approximately 354 people.

Congratulations to the researchers for their contribution to science!
