The Electrocardiography Research Group at the Industrial University of Santander was awarded the 2025 National Epidemiology Award in the “Best Research Poster” category. The award was presented by the Colombian Epidemiology Association (ASOCEPIC) during its first meeting, held at the Pontifical Xavierian University on September 26 and 27.
The award-winning work, entitled “Impact of cumulative systolic blood pressure and serious adverse events on the effectiveness of intensive blood pressure treatment. A randomized clinical trial,” is the result of a collaborative effort between UIS professors Oscar Leonel Rueda-Ochoa and Lyda Z. Rojas, a member of the EKG Group and senior researcher, together with Dr. Oscar H. Franco, a prominent researcher at the universities of Utrecht and Erasmus in the Netherlands.
The study is of great clinical relevance because it explores the impact of cumulative systolic blood pressure and adverse events on the effectiveness of intensive treatments for hypertension. Its findings represent a significant advance in the understanding of cardiovascular disease and could influence future treatment guidelines.
This project, which is still under development, has the active participation of members of the UIS Cardiovascular Research Group. Dr. Lyda Marina Herrera, María Alejandra Reyes, Ronnie Celis, and students Yulieth Mayorga, Simón Rincón, Jhoan Muñoz, and Jorge Alejandro Laguna continue to formulate new questions and lead projects that stem from the award-winning work.
The distinction not only recognizes the quality and scientific rigor of the research carried out at the UIS, but also underscores the importance of training new generations of scientists. It is tangible proof that collaboration and dedication can lead to discoveries with a major impact on public health.
