Santander Governor’s Office, HUS and UIS Join Forces to Transform Facilities and Strengthen Healthcare in Santander

The joint efforts of the Santander Governor’s Office, the Santander University Hospital (ESE Hospital Universitario de Santander – HUS), and the Universidad Industrial de Santander (UIS) have resulted in new facilities designed to promote the well-being and education of those preparing to pursue careers in the healthcare field.

The three institutions officially opened the new Academic and Well-Being Area, located on the 13th floor of HUS. Spanning 1,182 square meters, this facility is designed to provide better conditions for studying, eating, resting, and recreation for healthcare students, medical interns, and residents undertaking their clinical training at the hospital.

This project marks a significant step forward in strengthening HUS as an institution and recognizes the importance of providing adequate facilities for those who, in addition to fulfilling their academic responsibilities, participate in clinical training within a hospital environment.

A Partnership That Turns Joint Efforts into Tangible Results

The new area is the result of an agreement between Santander University Hospital and the Industrial University of Santander. Under this agreement, HUS allocated a portion of its premises, while UIS committed to carrying out the comprehensive renovation of the facilities, assuming all associated costs.

In fulfilling this agreement, the university oversaw every stage of the project, including structural reinforcement, demolition, construction, furnishing, and interior decoration. These efforts transformed the 13th floor into a facility equipped to meet the academic and well-being needs of healthcare students, medical interns, and residents.

The project reflects the scope of collaboration among the three institutions: the Santander Governor’s Office and HUS, through their efforts to strengthen infrastructure and institutional capabilities, and UIS, through the comprehensive execution of the project.

The result is a facility that contributes to the well-being of those training in the hospital environment and strengthens the conditions that support their professional development.

1,182 Square Meters Dedicated to Education and Well-Being

The new Academic and Well-Being Area features a library, academic spaces, dining and rest areas, a gym, and recreational facilities.

These spaces are specifically intended for students enrolled in healthcare programs, medical interns, and residents undertaking their training at HUS. Their purpose is to provide suitable environments for studying, eating, resting, and socializing during the demanding schedules associated with clinical training.

The facility is expected to benefit approximately 1,451 students per semester, including around 100 medical interns and 118 residents.

With the opening of this facility, the hospital strengthens the well-being conditions available to those completing their training on its premises. This initiative recognizes that developing the healthcare workforce also requires appropriate environments for learning and recovery throughout demanding academic and clinical schedules.

Santander Governor’s Office and HUS Drive Healthcare Development in Santander

Under the leadership of Santander Governor Juvenal Díaz Mateus and the management of HUS Executive Director Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Ricardo Arturo Hoyos Lanziano, institutional collaboration continues to focus on strengthening the hospital’s capabilities and improving its facilities and infrastructure.

The new area adds to ongoing efforts to establish HUS as a strategic institution for healthcare delivery and the training of the healthcare workforce needed by the department.

As part of this initiative, UIS contributed by carrying out the entire renovation project under the agreement signed with the hospital. Cooperation among the institutions turned an interinstitutional commitment into tangible facilities that support the well-being of future healthcare professionals.

Three Milestones Shaping the Future of Santander University Hospital

The opening of the new Academic and Well-Being Area coincides with two other institutional achievements: HUS’s official recognition as a University Hospital and the certification in Good Clinical Practice awarded by the National Institute for Food and Drug Surveillance (Instituto Nacional de Vigilancia de Medicamentos y Alimentos – Invima) to its Clinical Trials Center.

Recognition as a University Hospital reaffirms the institution’s commitment to healthcare workforce training and to integrating patient care with teaching. Meanwhile, Good Clinical Practice certification strengthens its capacity to conduct clinical research in accordance with quality and safety standards.

These three milestones—the new well-being facilities, recognition as a University Hospital, and the advancement of clinical research—contribute to HUS’s institutional development and enhance its ability to integrate healthcare delivery, education, and research.
