The UIS promotes new partnerships to strengthen higher education in Vichada, with support from the National Government

What for years was a distant promise for hundreds of young people in the eastern part of the country is now beginning to take shape as a tangible reality. The strengthening of public higher education in Vichada is moving forward steadily thanks to the joint work between the Industrial University of Santander, Colombia’s Ministry of National Education, and strategic partners in the region.

The recent visit of Jorge Villamizar Morales to the department reaffirms this commitment, which aims to bring quality education to historically excluded regions. In the municipality of Puerto Carreño, young people who previously had no access to university education are now beginning to build a new life project.

Currently, around 70 students are enrolled in the Agroindustrial Administration program, designed to respond to the productive needs of the region. This academic offering not only expands educational coverage but also strengthens key sectors and builds local capacities.

“We are reaching territories where this opportunity had never existed before. It is a national project that transforms realities,” Villamizar emphasized, highlighting the fundamental role of institutional support from the National Government in making this initiative possible.

New partnerships for development

The impact of this strategy is enhanced through collaboration between UIS and Electrovichada, led by its manager Juan Camilo Gómez—an alliance that paves the way for sustainable energy development in the department.

Through the Center for Research in Renewable Energies (CINER), training in clean energy—especially solar energy—is being promoted, taking advantage of the territory’s high potential.

“We are training the human talent that Vichada needs to face its energy and productive challenges,” Gómez stated.

More than education: research and future

The project is not limited to academic training. It includes applied research, cooperation with national and international partners, and the strengthening of educational infrastructure, such as upgrades to CINER that will provide better conditions for students and faculty.

Despite adverse conditions, such as high temperatures and historical infrastructure limitations, institutional commitment remains strong.

The arrival of public higher education in Vichada represents much more than classrooms and academic programs. It opens opportunities for a generation that can now pursue education without leaving their territory, directly contributing to the development of their region.

Today, Vichada is beginning to establish itself as a land of opportunity, where education, strategic partnerships, and institutional support become drivers of social transformation and sustainable development.
