The UIS promotes careers with high job prospects: this is how salaries for recent graduates in Colombia stand

Choosing a career path is one of the most important decisions for any student. In addition to their vocation, many young people today are looking for academic programs that will allow them to plan for a stable and competitive future career. In this context, the Industrial University of Santander (UIS) offers academic programs aligned with several of the areas that, according to national studies, offer the best salaries for recent graduates in Colombia.

Recent data from the Labor Observatory for Education show that:

Engineering: among the highest-paying careers

The fields of engineering, industry, and construction are among the highest paid in the country. Approximately 32.4% of graduates in these disciplines earn more than 2.5 times the minimum wage in their first job, reflecting the high demand for professionals with technical and scientific training.

In this field, the UIS offers programs such as Civil Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, and Petroleum Engineering, which prepare students to lead technological, energy, and industrial projects that drive the country’s development.

According to national statistics, around 22% of university graduates in Colombia belong to engineering fields, confirming the strategic importance of these programs for the country’s development.

Basic sciences: research and development with impact

The university also trains professionals in biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics, and geology, areas that are fundamental to scientific advancement, research, and innovation.

In the Colombian job market, graduates in basic sciences can start their professional lives with salaries of around $2,000,000 or $2,100,000 per month in fields such as environmental consulting, laboratories, industry, data analysis, or scientific research.

Although starting salaries may vary depending on the sector, many professionals in these areas significantly increase their income by joining applied research projects, technology companies, or continuing their postgraduate studies, where specialization broadens job opportunities.

Science and health: knowledge with social impact

The Industrial University of Santander offers several health-related programs, including Medicine, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Microbiology and Bioanalysis, and Nutrition and Dietetics. These highly demanded careers prepare students to build professional paths focused on improving community well-being and quality of life.

In Colombia, recent graduates in these fields typically start their careers with salaries ranging from approximately 1.5 to 2.5 times the minimum monthly wage, depending on the position, healthcare institution, and type of employment contract.

In the case of Medicine, for example, salaries can increase significantly with experience or clinical specializations. Similarly, nurses, physical therapists, and nutritionists can expand their job opportunities in hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation centers, public health programs, or private practice.

In addition to remuneration, the health sector is characterized by relatively stable levels of employability, allowing professionals to project sustained job growth throughout their careers.

Social sciences and creativity for understanding society

The academic offering also includes programs such as Law, Economics, Social Work, Philosophy, History and Archival Science, and Industrial Design.

In these areas, national statistics show a diverse picture. In the field of social sciences, journalism, and communication, for example, about 13% of graduates earn around minimum wage, while 34.4% receive between one and 1.5 times minimum wage at the start of their professional careers. However, approximately 20% earn more than 2.5 times minimum wage, especially when they join specialized sectors or gain experience.

A university with high employability

Choosing a career also means thinking about opportunities after graduation. In this regard, UIS stands out for the results of its graduates in the job market. According to indicators from the QS World University Rankings, 73.8% of UIS graduates find employment within a maximum of 15 months after graduation, which demonstrates the relevance of its academic programs and their connection to the needs of the productive sector.

This indicator shows that almost three out of four professionals trained at the institution enter the labor market within a competitive time frame, reflecting the confidence that companies and organizations place in the academic quality of the university.

Choose with a vision for the future

Labor market statistics show that programs related to technology, engineering, science, and health continue to offer ample opportunities for professional development. In this context, studying at UIS means training at an institution recognized for its academic quality, research, and connection to the country’s productive sectors.

Every year, thousands of young people decide to start their professional life at the Industrial University of Santander. Choosing a career does not only define what you are going to study: it defines the future you are willing to build.

At UIS, that future begins with a decision: to commit to knowledge, innovation, and everything you are capable of achieving.
