Imagine walking across the UIS central campus and looking up. There it is, standing tall, bright, and impressive. Now imagine that the building you see every day is considered one of the best in the world in educational architecture.
The Industrial University of Santander (UIS) is celebrating a historic achievement: the Humanities building has received two high-level international awards.
In 2024, it was awarded at the Architecture Biennial in Quito, Ecuador. And in 2026, it achieved the highest award in the Education category of the Building of the Year Awards given by ArchDaily, consolidating itself as a global benchmark in university architecture. It is no coincidence; it is vision, it is excellence, it is UIS.
An 11,812-square-meter project designed to transform
The building has 11,812 square meters of floor space, distributed over nine floors plus a basement, strategically located on a naturally sloping site that allowed for the creation of two public entrances connected to the campus.
Its longitudinal floor plan, approximately 70 meters long by 15 meters wide, organizes the academic spaces in a clear and efficient manner, articulating:
Lecture halls and specialized classrooms.
Collaborative study rooms.
Teaching and administrative offices.
Student meeting areas.
Circulation areas designed as spaces for gathering and dialogue.
Architecture that engages in dialogue, rather than imposing itsel
The concept is based on a powerful idea: the humanities need spaces that are open to critical thinking and collective encounters.
That is why the building favors interior courtyards that guarantee natural lighting and cross ventilation that improves thermal comfort; concrete and glass with solar control systems, as well as wide circulation areas that invite interaction.
Its sober volumetry converses with the vegetation and topography of the campus. It is contemporary architecture that understands the context and enhances it.
Engineering that supports knowledge
Behind its presence lies structural precision:
Reinforced concrete system designed with high seismic resistance criteria.
Structural cores that integrate stairways and elevators, providing stability and efficiency.
Modulation that allows flexibility in interior layout.
Bioclimatic strategies that optimize energy consumption.
Engineering is not a complement. It is the invisible support that guarantees permanence, safety, and sustainability.

The protagonists of a global vision
The project was led by architects Daniel Bonilla and Marcela Albornoz, who succeeded in creating a building that transcends functionality to become an institutional symbol. Their proposal was internationally acclaimed for its conceptual clarity, its integration with the environment, and its contribution to contemporary educational architecture.
The UIS in the world
When a university project wins in Quito and is then chosen as the best in the world in its category by global vote on ArchDaily, the message is clear:
- UIS does not just educate.
- UIS builds benchmarks.
- UIS stands out on the international stage.
Today, every person who enters the Humanities building enters a globally recognized space. They enter a symbol of quality, innovation, and public vision. This building is not just infrastructure, it is identity, international projection; it is the image of the Industrial University of Santander before the world.
