“Reading to take care of yourself,” the collection that promotes emotional well-being at UIS

“Read to take care of yourself” is the name of the special collection that reactivated the Satellite Library located in the Student Welfare building on the Central Campus of the Industrial University of Santander (UIS). In this space, students can access more than 200 copies of works by world-renowned authors, focused on well-being and mental health.

“The collection is divided into four sections or ‘calls’. The first invites you to rediscover your inner world; the second addresses the restless mind; the third focuses on motivation; and the fourth and last is dedicated to self-care. The invitation is for the university community to heed the call that each book is making,” explained Fernanda Sandoval Moreno, a social work student and library assistant.

The selection of books and the focus of this collection were developed by Sandoval Moreno, who, as a UIS student, decided to contribute to the promotion of emotional well-being among her peers and the entire university community.

“The main idea is to bring the community closer to literature, especially topics related to mental health, an aspect that I consider essential to explore, especially among students, so that they can face academic challenges with a healthy emotional state,” he added.

Since its reopening, several students have shown interest in exploring the available works, highlighting this initiative as a strategy that contributes to the overall well-being of the UIS family.

“I really like this initiative and appreciate the University’s interest in creating tools that help strengthen students’ mental health,” said Samuel Dempsey, a law student.

They also expressed their satisfaction with the reopening of the Satellite Library, a space that allows them to take a break from their daily routine and find moments of tranquility through reading. “It’s very positive that this space is back in operation. Many students come to this building to eat, attend medical appointments, or relax, and being able to connect with books here makes it an ideal place,” said María Ochoa, a petroleum engineering student.

The Student Wellness Satellite Library is open continuously, Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It also offers book loans for a maximum period of 15 days.
