More accessible campus: UIS introduces electric vehicles to support people with reduced mobility

Starting today, the Specialized Health Unit of the Universidad Industrial de Santander (UISALUD) has two new specialized electric vehicles for transporting people with reduced mobility within the UIS main campus.

The initiative, jointly led by the UIS Rector, Professor Hernán Porras Díaz, and UISALUD, aims to facilitate movement for users with temporary or permanent mobility difficulties, thereby strengthening the institution’s commitment to inclusion, accessibility, and the provision of human-centered services.

The vehicles will operate on the main campus, covering routes between the Carrera 30 gate and UISALUD, as well as between the Carrera 25 gate and the health unit, in both directions.

These are two electric vehicles with an approximate range of 50 kilometers, adapted to transport people who use wheelchairs, orthoses, crutches, walkers, or who have osteoarticular conditions that make mobility difficult. Although primarily intended for UISALUD users, they will also be available to support members of the university community or visitors who require assistance due to health conditions.

During the official handover, Administrative Vice-Rector Professor Gerardo Latorre Bayona highlighted that this action responds to the institution’s goal of continuously improving services offered to the university community.

“Today the University administration, led by Rector Dr. Hernán Porras Díaz, is pleased to deliver these two vehicles for people with reduced mobility. It is a service for everyone who comes to the campus. The University has always aimed to offer better services in every sense and to respond to the needs expressed by the community,” he said.

He added that the electric vehicles will remain on campus and began providing services to the community from their very first day of operation.

For his part, UISALUD Director Santiago Ramírez Segura explained that this acquisition represents a concrete solution to the internal distances on campus. “For some time, it has been an ongoing challenge for our users to move from the points where they get out of their vehicles to the UISALUD facilities. With these vehicles we make that journey easier and address a real need for those with mobility difficulties,” he stated.

How to access the service

One of the vehicles will be stationed in front of the UISALUD facilities and the other near the parking area of the Auditorio Luis A. Calvo. Access will be arranged through the security staff at the Carrera 25 and Carrera 30 gates, who will coordinate directly with the drivers. The service will be provided without prior booking, with prioritization based on health condition and vehicle availability.

For users, the launch of these vehicles represents greater autonomy and well-being. This was expressed by Inés, a UISALUD user: “I love this new way of getting around for those of us with reduced mobility. It gives us more independence and greatly reduces physical strain. It’s a big step forward for all members.”

With this new implementation, UISALUD continues to advance its goal of providing comprehensive, dignified, and accessible care, demonstrating that it strengthens its services every day to meet the real needs of its users.
