Sheyla Yurian Pardo González, a second-year graduate student in Internal Medicine, participated in the ACADI (Colombian Association of Digestive System Associations) Congress, held in Barranquilla from November 20 to 22.
Dr. Pardo participated by presenting a research paper in poster format entitled: Association between adverse experiences in childhood and irritable bowel syndrome in the adult population.
The study showed a high prevalence of adverse childhood experiences, especially emotional abuse and neglect, demonstrating a significant association with irritable bowel syndrome, OR 3.17 (95% CI 1.53-6.68) with emotional neglect and OR 2.28 (95% CI 0.96-5.5) with emotional abuse. These findings support the importance of incorporating psychosocial assessment into the comprehensive approach to functional gastrointestinal disorders.
During the Congress, three clinical practice guidelines were launched (management of Helicobacter pylori, gastroesophageal reflux, and colon cancer screening). The meeting was attended by more than 1,200 health professionals, including gastroenterologists and physicians from different specialties.
The following doctors also participated in the research: Jair Ruiz Lobo, internist-gastroenterologist, professor at the UIS, and specialist at the Instituto de Gastroenterología y Hepatología del Oriente; Elkin Llanéz Anaya, psychiatrist, professor at the University of Santander; and Claudia Lucía Figueroa, internist-MSc in epidemiology, full professor in the Department of Internal Medicine.
