Gilberto Javier Díaz Toro, a systems engineer with a Ph.D. in Computer Science, has been appointed director of the Division of Information and Communication Technologies (DTIC) at the Industrial University of Santander (UIS). In this role, his main challenge will be to promote the adoption of new technologies to optimize the institution’s core processes.

“In this role, I will seek to generate greater value for the University by leveraging information technologies that allow us to move toward new scenarios, particularly through the use of artificial intelligence to support various processes,” stated Díaz Toro.

The new director has several short- and medium-term initiatives planned. Among the most immediate are strengthening the institution’s IP telephony and implementing more efficient strategies for information and data management.

“We want to migrate the University’s IP telephony to open-source software solutions, which will allow us to optimize resources and reduce licensing costs. Likewise, we are working on the implementation of a ‘data lake’ that will facilitate the use of data and help streamline processes,” he explained.

One of the main challenges of his tenure will be the strategic integration of artificial intelligence, a key tool in the digital transformation of organizations.

“We have already identified technologies that will allow us to strengthen institutional processes and improve user service, particularly through the help desk, using locally implemented artificial intelligence solutions, which will avoid additional licensing costs. These tools are currently in the testing phase,” he added.

Before assuming this position, Gilberto Javier Díaz Toro served as the Rector’s Office’s ICT advisor.

With this appointment, the UIS is moving forward with its goal of consolidating efficient, innovative technology management aligned with the challenges of digital transformation.
