The UIS Socorro campus is decked out in yellow as part of World Suicide Prevention Day, an event promoted by the World Health Organization (WHO) that aims to raise awareness about the importance of mental health self-care, active listening, and community support.
The event, led by the University Wellness Department, encourages reflection on the role that educational institutions, local authorities, and health professionals play in creating protective environments.
“Listening to other people is a necessity for the community. The simple act of sitting down with someone who is at risk of suicide is an act of care in itself, and it confronts us with what it means to provide psychological first aid in our community,” explained Nydia Carreño Camacho, psychologist and coordinator of University Well-being at the UIS Socorro Campus.
According to Carreño Camacho, the key is to accompany without judging, listen with empathy, and guide toward professional help if signs of risk are identified. “We hope that every member of the community can offer this kind of close support in difficult situations,” she added.
As part of this commemoration, the headquarters has prepared a special program that includes educational, psychoeducational, and communication campaigns, as well as a mural with awareness messages. In addition, in partnership with the Municipal Health Secretariat, the “Zumba for Life” activity will be held at the Citizen Integration Center in the 16 de Marzo neighborhood of Socorro on Thursday, September 11, at 6:00 p.m.
The UIS in the Capital Comunera seals its commitment to the comprehensive well-being of its academic community and extends an invitation to all its members to join in these actions that promote life, solidarity, and mental health.
