The Industrial University of Santander (UIS) held the inauguration ceremony for the reading clubs for students at the Central Campus, an initiative that seeks to strengthen critical literacy skills in the university community during the 2026-1 academic period. On this occasion, the program will address the theme of friendship through a journey through renowned works of universal literature.
“The UIS reading clubs are a space that promotes the habit of literary reading and, in turn, strengthens critical thinking through discussion and collective reflection. We work with 14 texts from different literary genres, authors, periods, and places around the world. We want students to have the opportunity to reconnect with genres that are sometimes distant or complex, such as poetry, novels, micro-stories, literary essays, and chronicles, among others,” explained Juliana Morantes, mediator of the UIS reading clubs.
The students highlighted that this extracurricular space uses a dynamic methodology, supported by participatory activities that strengthen their reading skills and provide them with useful tools for their academic training.
“Book clubs not only nurture students who love literature and find in it a form of expression, but also strengthen critical reading skills. Tackling complex texts together, with explanations and collective analysis, contributes to the development of critical readers, which is essential for any professional career,” said Alejandra Castellanos, a student pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Spanish Language and Literature.

Participants also highlighted that each meeting not only opens the doors to the world of literature, but also provides an opportunity to break the routine, clear the mind, and strengthen bonds of friendship among students.
“These clubs contribute a lot to the university community, as they promote integration among students from different majors, the exchange of experiences, and the recommendation of readings that enrich academic and personal development,” said Ángel Larrota, an industrial engineering student.
The UIS reading clubs are located on the north side of the first floor of the Humanities II building and are open to all students interested in strengthening their connection with reading and critical thinking. In addition, a certificate is awarded to each participant at the end of each semester.
