1,587 students begin their university journey at UIS today

With a mix of nerves and excitement, nearly 1,600 young people experienced their first day as students at the Universidad Industrial de Santander. The central campus welcomed them this Monday, July 28, as part of the UIS Welcome Week — a space designed to support their transition into university life.

“I feel happy because I worked hard to get here, and the sense of belonging the university gives us is really amazing. They’ve organized activities with professors, deans, and even the rector, and that honestly makes us feel incredible,” said Juan Manuel Arenas, a first-semester Systems Engineering student.

On this first day of activities, the students met members of the Academic Council, led by Rector Hernán Porras Díaz, who officially welcomed them to their new academic home. During the event, students learned more about the university’s vice-rectorates, faculties, and schools — all part of the institution’s mission to educate professionals, generate knowledge, and positively impact society.

“Our job is to make sure you have all the tools to be happy. That you lack nothing to feel comfortable here — that’s our mission. Pursue your happiness, and when challenges arise, don’t hesitate to ask for help. We’ll be here to support you,” said the rector during his address.

Through cultural activities, talks about what it means to be part of UIS, and a guided tour of the central campus, students gained a deeper understanding of their Alma Mater — a place committed to academic excellence, ethics, and social transformation. “We’ve learned that we have a lot of freedom, but also that we must be responsible with that freedom we’re being given. I’m very excited for this new chapter in my life,” said Mayra Alejandra Muñoz, a Geology student.

The induction week will continue with a wide range of cultural, athletic, and academic activities, organized by the System of Academic Excellence (SEA), aimed at strengthening students’ sense of belonging and preparing them for the challenges ahead.
