The Industrial University of Santander (UIS) was present at the official launch of the 32nd ASCUN National University Games, an event that took place on the afternoon of Monday, September 30, at the Magistral Auditorium of the University of Santander (UDES).
Under the slogan “Santander is your home, and sports are our flag,” the sports delegations from the higher education institutions of Bucaramanga and its metropolitan area welcomed the competition that will turn the region into the epicenter of sports and university culture in the country.
“We are very pleased that the city of Bucaramanga and its metropolitan area, the department of Santander in general, will welcome these 9,000 participants; including 6,000 athletes, 2,000 cultural actors, and more than 1,000 instructors, a commitment in which the university world will express itself through sports and culture,” said Óscar Domínguez González, executive director of the Colombian Association of Universities (ASCUN).

From October 17 to 31, competitions will be held in multiple sports disciplines, in parallel with the ASCUN Cultura National Festival, an event that will bring together more than 9,000 people, including athletes, artists, executives, administrators, and support teams from universities throughout Colombia.
At the launch event, which was attended by academic authorities, sports representatives, and the media, the UIS delegations played a prominent role, reflecting the institution’s commitment to organizing and promoting these national games.
According to UIS professor Erwin Fernández Rico, “more than 260 athletes will represent the UIS in the National University Games, with the possibility of historically improving the medal count that has been achieved so far in the national games.”

During the presentation, the official program and venues that will host participants in Bucaramanga, Floridablanca, Girón, and Piedecuesta were announced. The figures confirmed the magnitude of the event: more than 5,500 athletes will compete in the games and nearly 2,000 artists will showcase their talent at cultural festivals, accompanied by around 1,500 members of management, administrative, and support teams.
The launch concluded with a social gathering that served as a prelude to the two weeks of activities that will mark the history of the region.
For UIS student and athlete Nathaly Suarez, “representing the UIS in these National Games is a source of pride, as it is one of the best universities in the country and it is very exciting”; she also emphasized that they hope to represent the university in the best possible way.
With this event, Bucaramanga and the UIS not only opened their doors to sports and university culture, but also reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening young talent and integrating the country through higher education.
