The rector of the Industrial University of Santander (UIS), Hernán Porras Díaz, officially opened two study centers located in the Faculty of Sciences, intended for students of the Schools of Biology and Mathematics. A small theater was also unveiled, connecting the basement with the first floor of the building, designed for academic and integration activities outside traditional classrooms.

“Each study center has an area of approximately 80 to 85 square meters. The spatial layout, furniture, and interior designs were defined together with the students to respond precisely to the needs of each program. The advantage is that all the recently delivered study centers have different designs, built with input from the students themselves,” explained Pascual Cortés, architect of the Physical Plant Division.

The teachers celebrated this renovation and the improvements made to the building, as they strengthen the academic processes for both students and teachers.

“The students had always had a small and not very adequate space. Thanks to the university administration, today they have a spacious, comfortable place designed for them to devote themselves fully to their studies,” said Bjorn Reu, director of the UIS School of Biology.

For their part, students enthusiastically welcomed the new study centers and emphasized their satisfaction at having participated in the design of these spaces. They also thanked the administrators for listening to them and taking their needs into account.

“It’s important because we had been without adequate space for our large student body for a long time. Many of our requests were addressed. It’s essential that we continue to take advantage of these spaces and that the University continues to listen to the student body in order to improve our professional training,” said Paula Laguado, a biology student.

They also highlighted the construction of the theater, noting that it beautifies the building and facilitates curricular and extracurricular activities.

“It’s great because it gets people interested in the facilities and makes for a much more comfortable academic experience,” said Jeison Rueda, a mathematics major.

Finally, UIS officials reported that they are making progress in adapting 12 new offices for teachers and staff at these schools, with the aim of continuing to strengthen the academic and administrative conditions of the Faculty of Sciences.
