An academic paper on hypoplastic left heart syndrome in newborns received very positive feedback for addressing a topic that has been little explored in Colombian scientific literature.
Medical students participated in the XIII Pan-American Congress of Pediatrics and Neonatology, held recently in Cartagena, where they presented a comprehensive review on the clinical recognition, stabilization, and transport of newborns with hypoplastic left heart syndrome without a prenatal diagnosis.
The paper, titled “Clinical Recognition, Stabilization, and Transport of Newborns with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome Without Prenatal Diagnosis: A Comprehensive Review,” addresses a complex congenital heart condition and the challenges posed by its identification and timely care when it has not been detected during pregnancy.
The research was conducted by students Kleider Yessid Ortega Gualdrón, María Camila Leal Medrano, Geraldyne Osorio Rincón, Giseth Fernanda Pérez Torres, Javier Fernando Rosero Madroñero, and Juan Pablo Guzmán Gutiérrez, under the guidance of Professor Juan Diego Ojeda Hernández, a physician and pediatrician at UIS.
Although the paper did not receive an award, its authors received positive feedback for the relevance of the topic addressed, especially since it is a largely unexplored field and, as noted during the conference, there is limited literature on it in Colombia.
Participation in this international academic forum provided an opportunity for future physicians to strengthen their research skills, share their findings with the scientific community, and contribute to the discussion of clinical challenges relevant to neonatal care.
