The Industrial University of Santander (UIS) played a prominent role at the 2026 Epidemiology Conference of The Society for Epidemiologic Research (SER)—one of the most important academic gatherings in this field in the United States—held in Phoenix, Arizona, from June 23 to 26, 2026.

At the conference, a poster presentation titled “Simpson’s Paradox in a Clinical Trial: Myth or Reality? Controversy Over Systolic Blood Pressure Sustainability in the SPRINT Trial” was presented. This research sparked a wide-ranging academic discussion regarding the methodological challenges in the analysis of controlled clinical trials.

The study was led by Professor Óscar Leonel Rueda Ochoa and included the participation of Dr. Ronnie Celis and Dr. María Alejandra Reyes, members of the UIS Cardiovascular Research Group; Dr. Catalina Herrán-Fonseca, a Cum Laude graduate of the Autonomous University of Bucaramanga (UNAB); and Professor Dimitris Rizopoulos, director of the Department of Biostatistics at Erasmus University in the Netherlands.

The research highlighted the importance of exploring new methodological approaches that can overcome the limitations of classical Cox proportional hazards models in the analysis of controlled clinical trials.

Through this participation, the UIS reaffirmed its commitment to high-impact scientific research and to generating knowledge that contributes to international academic discussions on new tools and methodologies for health research.
