The UIS Launches Its Specialization in Psychiatry with Its First Cohort of Residents

Residentes

Committed to strengthening mental health in the region and the country, the Industrial University of Santander has launched its graduate program in Psychiatry. Eight physicians—graduates of the University of Pamplona, the Pedagogical and Technological University of Colombia (UPTC), and the UIS—began their training as part of the first cohort of this specialization, which is affiliated with the Department of Mental Health in the School of Medicine.

The residents, comprising four men and four women, will complete their training over three years, during which they will undertake clinical rotations at key institutions such as ISNOR, ISABU, San Camilo Psychiatric Hospital, the Niños de Papel Foundation, San Pablo Clinic, and the UIS University Wellness Center. These settings will ensure a comprehensive experience closely aligned with the clinical and social realities of the local environment.

This medical-surgical program is designed to train specialists with a contemporary perspective on mental health, integrating research as a cross-cutting theme. The curriculum begins with an exploration of psychopathology, the clinical interview, and therapeutic fundamentals; progresses to comprehensive care for vulnerable populations and the enhancement of pharmacological management; and culminates in service management, work with special populations, and the implementation of alternative intervention models, in accordance with current regulatory frameworks.

The launch of this specialization marks an academic milestone for UIS and represents a firm commitment to training professionals capable of responding, with scientific rigor and human sensitivity, to the current challenges of mental health.
