The fifth Colombian Eastern Bagpipe Festival comes to the UIS

With the screening of Urián Sarmiento’s documentary Son de Gaita, followed by a discussion that invites reflection on the importance of the gaita in the context of farm work, highlighting how indigenous gaita music has been an expression of identity, resistance, and community among farmers, the Industrial University of Santander is joining the Fifth Meeting of Gaitas of Eastern Colombia.

This event promotes indigenous gaita music, an ancestral heritage of the Caribbean Region, in Bucaramanga and Santander, with a social focus that brings well-being and easy access to historically excluded populations, generating a culture of peace through the reinterpretation and preservation of our cultural traditions.

The event will take place on Friday, August 1, starting at 5:00 p.m. in the Jorge Zalamea Hall. Admission is free, but you must reserve your spot at the following link.

Maestro Urián Sarmiento Obando is a musician, researcher, musicologist, percussionist, and bagpiper. He was born in 1976 in Bogotá and grew up surrounded by the arts, loving punk, rock, hardcore, jazz, and, of course, traditional Colombian music. He is currently the director of the Ensamble Caribe Uniandes and a professor in the Department of Music. He is also part of the Curupira, Hombre de Barro, and Trío Agua Grande projects, among others.

The event arose from the need for an exclusive event for gaita music in Bucaramanga, Santander, based on the growing interest of the population of eastern Colombia in this type of indigenous music.
