MUSILAB and the UIS Herbarium lead research on Socorro’s plant heritage

In Socorro, the MUSILAB Research Group and the UIS Herbarium are conducting research aimed at identifying, documenting, and evaluating native plants of heritage importance in the region.

The initiative seeks to identify wild species native to the mountains and rural environment, as well as useful plants or those that represent an identity value for the Socorro community. The objective is to understand their origin, the knowledge associated with their use, and their role in the historical, cultural, and environmental construction of the municipality.

This ethnobotanical exploration is based on a fundamental principle: knowledge of the territory is not only found in archives or scientific collections, but also in the living memory of those who have worked the land, gathered fruits, used medicinal plants, or inhabited the countryside for generations.

If you grow traditional plants, know or use medicinal plants, were or are a hunter or woodcutter, or gather or work the land, we want to hear from you.

Citizen participation will be key to strengthening recognition of Socorro’s plant heritage and contributing to the preservation of local knowledge. During the working sessions in the municipality, researchers will collect testimonies, stories, and experiences that will broaden understanding of plant diversity and its cultural significance.
