
The Fundación Cardio Infantil recognized Dr. Jaime Fernández Sarmiento, pediatric intensivist, PhD in Health Sciences, graduate of the Universidad Industrial de Santander, and current director of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, as “Best Researcher and Best Research Work” for his contribution to the scientific community.
Among the most relevant aspects of Dr. Fernández’s career are more than 20 years of experience in teaching and managing critically ill children in institutions and university referral centers, with an emphasis on the management of children who have undergone cadaveric and living donor liver transplants, post-kidney transplant, as well as regional recognition in the application and development of intensive care techniques such as continuous renal replacement therapies, advanced mechanical ventilation, multimodal hemodynamic monitoring, and the development of basic and advanced pediatric resuscitation strategies, on which he has published several books and texts nationally and internationally.
He also has managerial and administrative skills due to his participation in the direction and creation of high-quality accreditation processes for hospitals and intensive care units nationally and internationally, and the opening of simulation centers with the American Heart Association.
Dr. Fernández was a member of the Board of Directors of the Colombian Association of Critical Care Medicine from 2013 to 2015. He also has teaching and research experience and has participated in the creation of master’s degrees in Pediatric Critical Care throughout the country.
He is currently the president of the Latin American Society of Pediatric Intensive Care (SLACIP) for the period 2023-2025.
