Cardiovascular Research Incubator Advances Training in Artificial Intelligence Applied to Biomedical Research

Throughout 2026, the UIS Cardiovascular Research Incubator has strengthened its training in Artificial Intelligence (AI) applied to biomedical research by participating in various training and skill-building opportunities in this strategic area for science and innovation in health.

In April, members of the group participated in the First Artificial Intelligence Datathon, organized by the Critical Care Society of Panama in partnership with the Mayo Clinic and Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Later, in June, they participated in a training session on generative artificial intelligence led by Dr. Ángel Arenas, who holds a master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence from the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

During the second week of August, members of the incubator participated in the First Datathon of the Colombian Cardiovascular Foundation (FCV), organized by the FCV Research Institute, CriticalDataCare, and Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The purpose of these training programs is to apply the knowledge gained to the development of research projects that integrate artificial intelligence, cardiology, and biomedical data analysis, including:

1. Characterization of electrocardiographic findings and Holter electrocardiographic monitoring according to the different stages of Chagas disease using artificial intelligence tools.

This project is led by Lyda Victoria Rueda, a Ph.D. student in Biomedical Sciences at UIS, in collaboration with the Heart Failure Group at the Colombian Cardiovascular Foundation, led by Dr. Luis Eduardo Echeverría and Professor Lyda Z. Rojas. It also involves the UIS Neuroscience Group, led by Professor Carlos Conde.

2. Development of an artificial intelligence-based algorithm for differentiating wide-complex ventricular and supraventricular tachycardias.

This project is being carried out in collaboration with UIS undergraduate biomedical engineering students Edwing Giovanny Sánchez Orduz, Adriana de Cristo Pino Gómez, and María Alejandra Riveros Pedraza.

Through these initiatives, the UIS Cardiovascular Research Incubator, led by Professor Diego Rincón, reaffirms its commitment to incorporating emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence into biomedical research, promoting the training of new researchers and the development of tools that contribute to a better understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

This project represents a commitment to interdisciplinary research, innovation, and the development of human talent, with the goal of generating knowledge that, in the future, can translate into benefits for patients with cardiovascular conditions.
