Daniela Johanna Mojica Candela, Master’s student in Biology at the UIS, participated in the XIX Latin American Congress of Genetics with the research work on the ‘Revision of the scope of conservation genetics in birds of the family Trochilidae’.
This research was carried out together with Leidy Johanna Rueda and Professor Fernando Rondón González. There, the most discussed topic was the measurement of genetic diversity, followed by population differentiation. Coalescence, divergence time, phylogeography and taxonomic units were less reported. Estimates of effective population size were not considered in the studies. This review synthesizes contributions to the field of hummingbird population conservation from a genetic perspective.
“Being here has four perspectives, one of them is the collaborative one because I have contacted other researchers in my area to make connections and this generates the second perspective which is the generation of knowledge. I also feel it is important to give positioning to the UIS because of the international visibility. Finally, there is a comprehensive training that goes hand in hand with the mission of the university,” explained Mojica Candela, who has also been a professor at the University.
The UIS also stood out in this academic and scientific event thanks to the second prize in the Free Communications Section ‘Genomics and Molecular Genetics’, which was obtained with a research work carried out jointly by young people from the School of Biology together with colleagues from the Faculty of Dentistry of the National University and the Faculty of Medicine of the Cooperative University of Colombia.
The Congress was held at the Centro Universitario de Ciencias de la Salud (Cucs), one of the largest thematic centers of the University of Guadalajara.
With a student population of approximately 20,000 students, the Cucs is home to 19 undergraduate and 123 graduate programs, including specialties in various medical, nursing and dental areas, as well as master’s and doctoral degrees.
