The Universidad Industrial de Santander had an outstanding representation in the XXXVII Pan-American Congress of Trauma, Critical Care and Emergency Surgery and the XLVII National Surgical Congress of the Ecuadorian Society of Surgery, held recently in Cuenca, Ecuador. This event brought together professionals and academics from all over the Americas to share experiences, scientific advances and innovative strategies in the integral management of trauma.
On this occasion, María Adriana Serrano Gamboa, fourth year resident of the Specialization in General Surgery of the UIS and Director of Research of the Santandereana Trauma League, and Sergio Andrés Romero, general surgeon, associate professor of the Specialization in General Surgery of the UIS, fellow in trauma and emergency surgery at the Universidad del Valle and Academic Director of the Santandereana Trauma League, presented two scientific posters that reflect successful clinical experiences in the approach of critical situations related to thoracoabdominal penetrating trauma.
Works presented
“Challenging the conventional approach: transdiaphragmatic repair of intercostal artery in penetrating trauma”, in which a case of thoracoabdominal trauma with hemoperitoneum and active bleeding of an intercostal artery, successfully managed by means of a transdiaphragmatic ligation, is described. This surgical strategy allowed adequate bleeding control without the need for thoracotomy, thus reducing postoperative complications.
“Resuscitative sternotomy beyond Cali: feasibility and success in other cities”, which reports the effective application of a resuscitative sternotomy in a patient with penetrating thoracic trauma and intraoperative cardiorespiratory arrest, demonstrating the applicability and effectiveness of this technique in contexts other than high complexity trauma centers.
Both projects were developed in collaboration with residents Andrea Otálvaro (fourth year resident) and Sergio Parra (third year resident), as well as Daniela Arbeláez, Danna Lázaro and Mateo Murcia, active members of the Santandereana Trauma League.
The Santander Trauma League is an academic organization made up of students and graduates of the Universidad Industrial de Santander, which promotes continuing education, the development of research projects and social projection in the area of trauma, emergency surgery and critical care.
The participation of the UIS in this international event reaffirms the institutional commitment to academic and scientific excellence, promotes the exchange of knowledge with other institutions in the region and strengthens the positioning of the university as a reference in surgical training in Latin America.
