Prevention, diagnosis and awareness: cornerstones of World Prostate Cancer Day

During the World Prostate Cancer Day, which is commemorated every June 11, from the Specialized Health Unit of the Universidad Industrial de Santander, UISALUD, we join the international call led by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) to promote awareness of this disease, promote its timely diagnosis and contribute to reducing its impact on the male population.

Prostate cancer is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in men globally. According to WHO figures, nearly 1.4 million new cases were diagnosed worldwide in 2020, and it is estimated that this figure will continue to rise due to the aging of the population. In Latin America and the Caribbean, prostate cancer accounts for 21.8% of cancer cases in men and is responsible for 13.3% of deaths from this cause.

Among the main risk factors are age (especially after 50 years of age), family history, ethnic origin and certain lifestyle habits. Early detection by means of tests such as prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and digital rectal examination allows the disease to be identified in its early stages, significantly improving the prognosis and quality of life of patients.

From UISALUD, we call on men from the age of 50 (or from 45 if they have risk factors) to consult their doctor, access the available diagnostic tests and maintain healthy lifestyles. Likewise, we reiterate our commitment to the promotion of men’s health, access to timely diagnostic and treatment services, and the generation of informed environments that contribute to the prevention of prostate cancer.

At UISALUD we reinforce screening for the early detection of prostate cancer through our promotion and prevention programs. In addition, we have urology services on site, providing timely and specialized care for our users.
