The Dean’s Office of the Faculty of Science of the Universidad Industrial de Santander (UIS) and the Organizing Committee of the Month of Women and Girls in Science held the interdisciplinary discussion “Women in Science”, in commemoration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The event aimed to provide a space in which outstanding UIS women scientists shared their experiences, achievements and research with the university community.

“For me it is essential this type of outreach spaces, because making visible and recognizing our work is key, especially for us women. It is important to show what we do and the role we play in different areas of knowledge,” said María Camila Velandia Gélvez, a music graduate.

During the discussion, the researchers described the path they have taken in their careers, presented their objects of study and project results, and reflected on the historical challenges that women have faced in making their way in the scientific world. They also stressed the importance of continuing to create opportunities for new generations.

“I firmly believe that there are no exclusive fields for men or for women. We should never accept being told that we can’t do something. We have all the capacity, and if we are passionate about something, we can do it,” said Solange Roa Fuentes, a mathematics teacher.

The attendees appreciated the dialogue and the inspiration provided by the women scientists, who, despite the difficulties, have consolidated their careers and have become references for the new generations of women interested in science.

“The conversation was very enriching. I really liked the diversity of backgrounds and disciplines represented. It was inspiring to hear the perspectives of each of the professors and researchers,” said Paula Uscátegui, a Systems Engineering student.

For her part, Gabriela Sanchez, Physics student, shared how this space motivated her to continue advancing in her academic career:

“As a student in her last semesters, it helped me to reaffirm my goals. I am now more motivated to pursue a master’s degree and possibly a PhD. I will never hesitate to continue in the academic life”.
