With the aim of strengthening reasoning, communication skills, and fostering an early interest in mathematics, the Universidad Industrial de Santander (UIS), through its School of Mathematics, held the 26th edition of the Mathematics Calendar Project Student Meeting.
The academic event was organized by the Mathematics Education Research Group (EDUMAT) and brought together 151 fourth- and fifth-grade students from educational institutions across eight municipalities. The initiative promoted mathematics learning through problem-solving and collaborative work.
Throughout the event, participants tackled mathematical challenges, interactive activities, and technology-assisted classroom exercises. These experiences encouraged mathematical reasoning, effective communication of ideas, and problem-solving skills. The project demonstrates that learning mathematics can be dynamic, engaging, and meaningful.
UIS: A Meeting Point for Regional Collaboration
Students traveled from the municipalities of San Martín, El Playón, Barrancabermeja, San Gil, Bucaramanga, Floridablanca, Girón, and Piedecuesta, making the event an important space for academic exchange that strengthens mathematics education across different regions of Colombia.
“Together with our Recreational Mathematics instructors, we promote a problem-solving approach that helps students strengthen their reasoning and develop tools to face different situations in their daily lives. In this way, we fulfill the outreach mission of both the School of Mathematics and UIS,” said Daniel Moreno Caicedo, adjunct lecturer at the UIS School of Mathematics.
Jordan Velázquez Acosta, whose son attended the event from El Playón, shared his appreciation for the experience.
“First of all, I want to thank the teachers and UIS for giving my son the opportunity to participate. I feel very happy and proud that he could be part of this event. I have great confidence in him, and I hope he continues to grow through these mathematics activities,” he said.
Through initiatives like this, UIS reaffirms its commitment to community outreach and to strengthening the scientific and mathematical competencies of children, contributing to a well-rounded education that fosters critical thinking and creativity.
