Near 9,000 CDs and vinyl records in individual, double, and collection formats, which the professor and UIS graduate compiled over his lifetime, were donated by his family to the UIS Sound Library.

The decision was not easy for his sons Laura, Paola, and Jorge, because each record is part of the legacy of a human being and a professional whose passion for music was reflected in them.

During the first 25 years of 96.9 MHz UIS Estéreo “La voz de la Universidad” Engineer José Iván hosted radio shows such as “Colombia Tierra Firme,” “Nocturnal de Gala,” “Carátulas,” “Clásicos Populares,” “Arriba el Telón,” and “Música de la Historia,” becoming the most prolific producer on UIS Radio with 16 hours on air, broadcasting from monday to sunday.

His extensive musical knowledge allowed him to share detailed information with the audience about composers, their works, historical context, anniversaries, and accolades throughout that time.

Social Communicator and Journalist Paola Rocío Hurtado Duarte expressed, “After a year since my father’s passing, my siblings and I took the time to mourn and carefully consider everything surrounding our father’s belongings. One of the most important aspects of his life was his music collection—music and the people who knew him knew that my father owned a large collection of music that was part of his very soul.”

Classical, universal, erudite, Colombian, folk, Latin American, and various other genres of music that Engineer José Iván deeply understood now integrate into the UIS program as a testament to his contribution to university radio. His daughter added, “Given that the Universidad Industrial de Santander was his alma mater, something so beloved and cherished by him because it was one of his great loves, and the radio stations were a materialization of that deep love he had for his alma mater, we have decided, precisely for that reason, that the Universidad and the Emisoras UIS are the best home this great collection of my father’s music could have.”

With emotions running high, aware of the significance of this altruistic gesture toward what was Engineer José Iván’s second home and the academic stage where his professional studies began, his children are donating part of this valuable family heritage in the hope that the memory and contributions of the man who pioneered the creation of the Bachelor’s program in Music, the Specialization in Maintenance Management, the Cultural Directorate, and the International Piano Festival, of which he was a co-founder alongside José Tomás Illera, will be preserved and shared with the UIS audience.

“It feels like tearing something from our soul because it’s very tough, but we know it’s what’s right because of my father’s work in the region—building knowledge, building a plurality of new collective imaginaries for the city, the region, and the country. So, we believe it’s only fair that this dissemination continues, and it’s a way to extend my father’s mission as a teacher, pedagogue, musician. What better place than the university and in this case, Emisoras UIS, to continue this beautiful work my father did for so many years,” said his son, Graphic Designer Jorge Alonso Hurtado Duarte.

With the support of Planta Física, this legacy now adds to the sound heritage of the Industrial University of Santander. Through the Dirección de Comunicaciones responsible for the administration, operation, and programming of Emisoras UIS, this collection will integrate into their Sound Library, allowing progress in updating its archival and preservation systems in honor of one of its founders and now its greatest benefactor, Mechanical Engineer and Specialist in Technological Management, former director of the Offices of: Extensión Universitaria, Intercambio Académico, Relaciones Exteriores y Planeación, as well as the Escuela de Ingeniería Mecánica, la Dirección de Comunicaciones and three-time Director Cultural UIS, José Iván Hurtado Hidalgo, may he rest in peace.
