With the participation of more than 20 students from the ninth, tenth and eleventh grades from different educational institutions of the province García Rovira, the fifth version of Mathematical Circles began at the Universidad Industrial de Santander – Sede Málaga.

This initiative, promoted by the School of Mathematics of the UIS, aims to promote deep and fun learning of mathematics among young people, combining academic rigor with playful activities.

Adriana Albarracín, director of the project and professor at the UIS School of Mathematics, explained that each academic semester a version of Math Circles is held at the UIS Malaga Campus.

“We started with great enthusiasm the fifth version of this project led by the School of Mathematics together with the Institute of Regional Projection and Distance Education-IPRED. We seek to strengthen mathematics through didactic situations that bring students closer to rigorous mathematics without requiring prior knowledge of the subject,” said Adriana Albarracín.

In order for students in the last grades to participate in this UIS Math Circles project, school teachers must directly apply for a maximum of six students per educational institution.

Students from Colegio Fray José de las Casas Novas (San Andrés), Colegio Custodio García Rovira (Málaga), Escuela Normal Superior Francisco de Paula Santander (Málaga), and the educational institution El Tobal (Carcasí) are participating in the fifth version.

Cesar Castellanos, mathematics teacher at the Custodio Gracia Rovira school, highlighted that the Universidad Industrial de Santander carries out this type of process with students from the regions.
“I find these workshops very interesting because they motivate young people for mathematics. I am very happy that the UIS carries them out and I hope they will be held more often,” added Professor Castellanos.

At the end of April, a new day of Mathematical Circles will be held at the UIS Malaga Campus.
