With a concert by renowned Taiwanese pianist Dr. Shun-Fu Chang, the Universidad Industrial de Santander officially launched the 43rd UIS International Piano Festival, an event that, for more than four decades, has brought the piano closer to diverse audiences while positioning Bucaramanga as a cultural landmark in Colombia and Latin America.
The opening concert took place at the Luis A. Calvo Auditorium, bringing together students, artists, families, and members of the community for an evening that marked the official beginning of the festival, which will be held from August 10 to 22, 2026, under the theme “Silence, Echo and Memory.”
A festival that brings art closer to the community
Beyond the opening concert, attendees highlighted the importance of the Universidad Industrial de Santander in providing free access to high-quality artistic experiences, fostering cultural participation and audience development.
Judith Ester Ramírez Prada, a lawyer and amateur painter, shared that the festival has been part of her life for many years.
“I have been attending the International Piano Festival since I was in high school because I truly enjoy art. I am also a painter.”
For artist Sergio Vidal, initiatives like this allow the public to experience world-class artistic performances.
“Art, in all its forms, enriches us. The wonderful thing is that here we have the opportunity to attend, free of charge, an event of the same quality that we would normally find in Europe, the United States, or other countries.”
The piano as a meeting point between memory and society
Since its creation in 1984, the UIS International Piano Festival has become one of the most important piano festivals in Colombia and Latin America. Throughout its history, it has evolved beyond the concert stage to become a space where art engages with social, historical, and human realities.
This year’s edition invites audiences to reflect on piano works created in contexts of war, post-war, conflict, resistance, and reconstruction. Under the theme “Silence, Echo and Memory,” the piano becomes a witness to history and a powerful instrument for preserving collective memory, promoting knowledge, and inspiring reconciliation and hope.
A program for all audiences
From August 10 to 22, Bucaramanga will welcome artists from seven countries, alongside distinguished Colombian performers, in a program featuring gala concerts, recitals, masterclasses, exhibitions, academic activities, and performances in educational institutions.
One of the festival’s traditional highlights will once again be the 23rd National Piano Competition, reaffirming the University’s commitment to artistic excellence, the training of future generations of pianists, and the continued growth of Colombia’s musical community.
Art reflected in the festival’s official poster
As part of the visual identity of this edition, the 43rd UIS International Piano Festival unveiled its official poster, His Majesty the Piano, created by artist Ricardo Alipio Vargas Mantilla using mixed media on a 50 × 33 cm format.
The artwork focuses on the figure of the pianist, whose posture merges into an abstract landscape. Through a careful interplay of light and shadow, the composition emphasizes the tension in the performer’s hands, the curve of the back, and the intensity of concentration, capturing the moment when technique and emotion come together at the keyboard.
More than a promotional image, the poster embodies the spirit of the festival, celebrating the profound connection between the artist and the piano as a relationship rooted in dedication, sensitivity, and artistic creation.
With more than forty years of history, the UIS International Piano Festival continues to strengthen its legacy as one of Santander’s most important cultural traditions, where the piano transcends the concert stage to become a vehicle for dialogue, memory, and artistic expression.
