PhD student from UNINORTE carries out a research internship at UIS

UIS recibe a estudiante doctoral en su campus central 2025-2.

Within the framework of the institutional mobility program ‘Sígueme Posgrados’, student Andrés Javier Guerra Garay, who is studying for his PhD in Natural Sciences at the Universidad del Norte (UNINORTE), is currently doing a research internship at the Universidad Industrial de Santander (UIS), as a fundamental part of his academic training.

The research stay is carried out in the Biomedical Imaging, Vision, and Learning Laboratory (BIVL2ab) group, attached to the School of Systems Engineering and Computer Science of the UIS, recognized for its multidisciplinary approach in data analysis, computer vision and artificial intelligence applied to medicine and other areas of knowledge.

During his internship, Guerra Garay works under the co-direction of Professor Jorge Villamizar Morales and the advice of Professor Giovanni Calderón Silva, both researchers at the School of Mathematics of the UIS, developing a project focused on the modeling of fluids by means of mimetic finite difference schemes. This methodology seeks to accurately and efficiently represent complex physical phenomena in continuous media, with applications in various branches of science and engineering.

Andrés Javier’s doctoral work was also guided by Professor Carlos Arturo Vega Fuentes, from Universidad del Norte, and reflects the importance of inter-institutional cooperation spaces that strengthen the country’s research capabilities.

This internship represents a clear example of how academic and scientific collaboration between Colombian universities, promoted by initiatives such as the ‘Sígueme Posgrados’ agreement, contributes to the advancement of knowledge and the training of high-level researchers in the country.
