New directors take office in the Faculty of Sciences and four schools of the UIS

Gilberto Arenas Díaz is the new dean of the Faculty of Sciences after being sworn in by Rector Hernán Porras Díaz during the extended Academic Council session held this Tuesday.

He is a full time professor assigned to the School of Mathematics, he is also a graduate of the UIS Bachelor’s program in Mathematics in 1999 and since 2005 he joined his alma mater as a career.

“For me it is an honor to assume this position, I have a vision focused on the development plan of the Faculty and the visibility of the same internally and externally. I am a UIS graduate, thanks to the University I went to study my master’s degree and doctorate, it has been a pleasure to represent it wherever I go,” said Arenas Diaz, who is a native of Betulia (Santander).

Mauricio Rincón Ortiz was sworn in as the new head of Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science.

He holds a PhD in Science and Technology, mention in materials, from the Sábato Institute of Technology, belonging to the Universidad Nacional de General San Martín-Argentina, and is a materials engineer from the Universidad de Antioquia. He is also a researcher recognized by Minciencias with more than 18 years of experience.

“This new position for me represents the trust of my colleagues and it is a great challenge and the idea is to continue growing in the School,” said Rincón Ortiz, who has been with the institution for 10 years.

Alberto Ángel Martín will lead the School of Nutrition and Dietetics. He is a nutritionist and dietitian who graduated from the National University of Colombia in 2007. He has been involved in various research projects focused on the study of bioactive compounds and developing functional foods for the control of obesity and T2 diabetes.

“For me, being school director is a great responsibility to continue the work that previous directors have been doing and thus maintain the high quality we have in Nutrition and Dietetics. I assume the position with the greatest pleasure,” said the new director.

Geology will be in charge of Francisco Alberto Velandia Patiño, who has been a professor at UIS since 2011, also supporting postgraduate studies in geology, physics and engineering. He worked 21 years at Ingeominas (currently the Colombian Geological Service), where he coordinated geological mapping, hydrogeology and geothermal projects and was deputy director of Subsoil Resources.

“It is really an opportunity to offer more to students and what we can bring to the regions as UIS. In the field we notice the affection for the university and we will try to bring some of what we can give in terms of identification of geological hazards, geotourism projects, provide sustainable development initiatives, among other topics,” said Velandia Patiño.

Rafael Ángel Torres Amaris will head the School of Physics. He completed his undergraduate, master’s and doctoral studies at the UIS. His lines of research include quantum optics, optics and signal processing.

“It is a new stage in my university life and I want to give back to the UIS what it has given me and also improve the processes for the training of physicists,” said Torres Amaris.

The term of office of the new directors is two years from the moment they are sworn in by Rector Porras Díaz.
