
The Colombian Society of Engineers decorated Hernán Porras Díaz with the Order of Merit Julio Garavito in the Grade of Grand Cross, a distinction conferred by the National Government through the Council of the Order. This is the highest recognition and is awarded for his outstanding career and services rendered to the nation in the field of engineering.
Ángela Yesenia Olaya Requene, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, was in charge of presenting the decoration to the UIS Rector during the Solemn Session for the 138th anniversary of the Colombian Engineering Society (SCI).

“I am heartily grateful for this exaltation, which I interpret not only as a recognition of my professional career and years of service to higher education, but also – and especially – as a tribute to the Universidad Industrial de Santander and its historical commitment to the development of engineering in Colombia,” said Porras Díaz.
The Julio Garavito Order of Merit was created by the National Government with the aim of recognizing and exalting the work of Colombian engineers, it is regulated by Decree 1735 of 2015 of Public Function and is named after Julio Garavito Armero, an outstanding Colombian engineer and academic.

During the event, the UIS Rector met with Rubén Darío Ochoa, national director of the National Professional Engineering Council (Copnia); Germán Pardo, president of the Pan-American Union of Engineering Associations (Upadi); Hernando Monroy Benítez, president of the Colombian Society of Engineers (SCI); Admiral Walter Olmedo Wilches of the Colombian Navy and Gabriel Carrasquilla, president of the National Academy of Medicine.
