UIS Scientific Complex Featured in New Episode of Vive el Patrimonio

The sixth episode of Vive el Patrimonio: Una Década de Transformación showcases the UIS Scientific Complex for Health and Life Sciences Research, a 39,587-square-meter facility that integrates spaces for education, research, and the well-being of the university community.

Architecture, science, and education converge in a facility designed to expand the Universidad Industrial de Santander’s capabilities in research and higher education. The UIS Scientific Complex brings together 56 laboratories, 19 classrooms, 206 specialized spaces, a 400-seat auditorium, a library, gym, consultation rooms, study centers, plazas, and wellness areas.

Through this new episode, Vive el Patrimonio explores the history of this infrastructure, the architectural decisions that shaped its design, the technical challenges involved in its construction, and the way its spaces are now integrated into academic and scientific activities at UIS.

Architecture designed for science and university life

Beyond its dimensions and technical characteristics, the UIS Scientific Complex represents a new approach to university spaces. Likewise, the architectural project incorporated areas intended both for scientific activities and for the gathering and continued presence of the university community.

Architect Giancarlo Mazzanti, who participated in the development of the project, highlights this particular vision. The proposal sought to connect technical and scientific spaces with environments that would allow students to experience the University in a different way.

“He told me he wanted a 23rd-century building,” Mazzanti says, recalling the vision that guided the development of the project.

In this context, this perspective posed the challenge of creating infrastructure that was functional for scientific research while also providing spaces suited to the new dynamics of a university committed to knowledge generation.

Each of these decisions responded to the needs of an infrastructure designed to accommodate specialized academic, scientific, and administrative activities in a facility capable of meeting the demands of research and education in health and life sciences.

In this regard, the building not only demonstrates a physical transformation of the university campus but also reflects the evolution of UIS’s institutional capabilities to develop high-level research and educational processes.

A space for education and research

Today, the impact of the UIS Scientific Complex can be seen in the academic and scientific activities carried out there. More than 2,000 students pursue their education through five undergraduate programs and 16 graduate programs, including doctoral programs, master’s degrees, and specializations.

In this way, the infrastructure has become a space for developing human talent and generating knowledge in the field of health and life sciences. Furthermore, it strengthens the University’s capacity to address contemporary scientific and social challenges.

The story behind the spaces

Precisely, this relationship between infrastructure and transformation is what Vive el Patrimonio: Una Década de Transformación seeks to highlight. The documentary series does not simply showcase buildings; instead, it explores their history, examines the decisions that made their construction possible, and presents the purpose behind the spaces that are now part of university life.

In this sixth episode, the UIS Scientific Complex becomes a starting point for understanding how an architectural project can transcend its physical function and become a setting for education, research, and the creation of new opportunities for the university community.

More than a new building, the UIS Scientific Complex represents a vision for the future: a place where architecture, science, and education converge to contribute to knowledge generation and improve people’s lives.

With this episode, Vive el Patrimonio continues to tell UIS’s recent history through projects that transform spaces and create new opportunities for education, science, and society.
