During a meeting of the UIS Academic Council, Ricardo Arturo Hoyos, director of the Santander University Hospital, presented the healthcare center’s major institutional advancements, including the process of obtaining recognition as a University Hospital, as well as achievements in research, innovation, infrastructure, and teaching.
“We have just concluded the Academic Council meeting here at the Industrial University of Santander. I had previously requested an opportunity to participate and showcase all the achievements, results, and special projects to be developed during the remaining two years of my tenure,” said Hoyos.
During the academic meeting, the director explained that the HUS has already received recognition as a University Hospital, a process that has been developed jointly with the UIS since 2005 and which now ranks the hospital as the 33rd in the country to hold this distinction.
“Today, in 2026, we can already count ourselves as the 33rd hospital with University Hospital status. We are now awaiting the peer review decision to finalize this process,” he stated.
He also explained that the hospital’s strengthening includes certification of the clinical trials laboratory for human subjects, infrastructure modernization, the acquisition of state-of-the-art biomedical equipment, and the expansion of installed capacity.
The manager emphasized that these advancements directly impact the UIS academic community, particularly students, interns, residents, and faculty members who conduct their clinical rotations and training there.
“Everything is student-centered; our interns and residents will have access to state-of-the-art technological equipment and dedicated infrastructure spaces to facilitate teaching activities,” he said.
He added that the complexity of the cases treated at the HUS enhances the academic and professional experience of those training at the hospital. “We are focused on teaching, research, and innovation,” Hoyos emphasized before the Academic Council.
Finally, the manager stated that these advancements solidify Santander’s position as a regional leader in healthcare and specialized care: “Santander should be immensely proud to now have a hospital equipped with a clinical trials laboratory and an infrastructure dedicated to teaching.”
